There are three kinds of OH (I will, more often than not, use the plural - "overheads" - as part of my effort to keep distinct things that are distinct): Fixed overheads: (FOH): everything that recurs on a steady basis whether you ship no books or a million books - i.e. the salaries, rent, insurance, etc Direct Variable overheads: the portion comprising those costs that rise almost linearly with sales - e.g. shipping, commissions, and more. On the other hand, even first novelists should be able to retain either film/television, or foreign/translation, or both.

I think if anyone got advice from a beta that was “poor or barely useful” then they did not find an adequate beta reader. Shel Kaphan, Bezos’s former deputy, remembers him repeating Thomas Jefferson’s quote about the best government being the least government, but Kaphan worries more about Bezos applying his “take no prisoners” pragmatism to the Post: “There are conflicts of interest with Amazon’s many contracts with the government, and he’s got so many policy issues going, like sales tax.” One ex-employee who worked closely with Bezos warned, “At Amazon, drawing a distinction between content people and business people is a foreign concept.” Perhaps buying the Post was meant to be a good civic deed.
