But youth fiction is one area where I think there is an abundance of timeless classics, as well as some quality newer material coming out. (YA fiction is a whole other beast–and a whole other post one day!) I’m a fan of book series for young readers because they encourage more reading! She is (appropriately) called The Lady on the Grey, and the dead are in awe of her. Following the Yellow Brick Road, and trying to avoid the Wicked Witch of the West, the friends go on a journey to find the ‘Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ and help Dorothy get back home to Kansas.

At school, the seventh graders have been assigned a genetics project to research their family history. I thought the story was dated in a way that I suppose becomes classic and representative at some point but right now I didn’t entirely enjoy. The chapters are short, the text is beautifully clear and there are lots of illustrations. Summer Sunday's were made for cool events at Books of Wonder and this one is no exception. Fewer illustrations with whole pages of text in some books. A class of students could share this task, and paste the results together. During each science adventure, the class learns about some part of science (bats, dinosaurs, etc.). Dan Gutman also writes wonderful books for older readers.
