The open web isn’t always the fastest way to get content: it (usually) doesn’t cache content, and it’s not accessible without an internet connection. I think that the pessimist’s viewpoint is well-represented by these charts (and more so in the original report – recommended reading). Now anyone can be a publisher and tens of thousands of books are “self-published” by individuals and companies each year and used for many different purposes. While “Perennial Bestsellers” hoped to prove right or wrong the assumptions of anyone in the industry who was curious about continually bestselling titles, booksellers were the target audience for the study.

To put it simply, it ain’t an either/or proposition. Lastly, it's worth noting that Smashwords provides free ISBNs. The high end of pricing does not guarantee high quality (see Author Solution’s and their oodles of divisions), and the low end does not guarantee low quality. Online book retailing turns the traditional model on its head: With virtual shelf space replacing physical retail space, sales per square foot becomes a mathematical infinity. There would be no more returns, warehouse fees, printing expenses, or shipping costs.
