5 Keystroke Studies and the Investigation of Pauses The availability of keystroke recording as a tool for the collection of pausological data has, of course, opened up the possibility of close analysis of the distribution of pausing, that is, the location of non-fluency within the text string. Studies such as Warren’s (1996) follow the earlier direction of Matsuhashi (1981, 1982, 1987) in defining pause location principally with reference to the T-unit. Her comparative study of L1 and L2 writers focuses on T-unit junctures often quite broadly defined around the occurrence of major punctuation marks.
