Lesser Prairie-Chickens were first recorded in Kansas in 1872 when a hunting party commanded by Colonel Richard I. Dodge took 32 “grouse” in October on the small tributaries of the Cimarron River, likely in present-day Ford and Clark counties (Fleharty 1995:27). No records of the species are known from Colorado prior to 1900, though sand sagebrush (Artemisia filifolia) habitats certainly were present along both the Arkansas and Cimarron River drainages (Giesen 2000). Lesser Prairie-Chickens were first scientifically described in 1873 as a subspecies of Greater Prairie-Chicken but were later assigned species status in 1885 (Ridgway 1885).

Waddell and Hanzlick (1978) documented habitat loss in south-central and southwest Kansas, where center-pivot irrigation was established during the 1960s. Based on satellite imagery obtained in the mid-1970s, they determined that sand prairie in south-c entral Kansas and sand sagebrush prairie in southwest Kansas were being lost at annual rates of 5% and 6%, respectively. In one 749 km2 (289 mile2) tract that in 1974 consisted mainly of sand sagebrush prairie south and west of Garden City, Kansas, 44 sections (15%) had lost their grass by 1976.

2010). Haukos (2011) summarized the consensus view of researchers that the goal of tebuthiuron treatments for habitat restoration should seek to create a codominant community of shrubs and native grasses interspersed in patchy mosaics, which was the case for the 10,121 ha (25,000 acre) Weaver Ranch near Milnesand, New Mexico. If herbicide treatments are attempted, Haukos (2011) recommended tebuthiuron should be applied at low rates, should not be applied to sand shinnery oak habitats in poor range condition, and should always be followed by extended grazing deferment with a duration dependent on the subsequent response and climatic conditions.
