As with many of the issues we raise there are no simple answers to this question. What we are opening up is that ethics need to be understood as a process of exploration in which researchers reflect on their research questions, what possible routes there may be to gather the data, who the hoped for participants are and the contexts in which they may be accessed. The meaning of consent and how it can be sought is located in contexts. The issue of consent, central to most discussions of ethics, is drawn on here to illuminate our perspective on ethics as a process and a practice; if we understand negotiating consent as a relational and communicative act, it follows that researchers need to find appropriate ways to explain the study, what participation might involve and the potential risks, that are appropriate to the particulars of settings, participants and their circumstances.
