Traditional File Processing Systems When computer-based data processing was first available, there were no databases. To be useful for business applications, computers had to store, manipulate, and retrieve large files of data. Computer file processing systems were developed for this purpose. Although these systems have evolved over time, their basic structure and purpose have changed little over several decades. As business applications became more complex, it became evident that traditional file processing systems had a number of shortcomings and limitations (described next).

This is often the first step in database development. We introduce the concept of schemas and the three-schema architecture, which is the dominant approach in modern database systems. We describe the major components of the database environment and the types of applications, as well as multitier and enterprise databases. Enterprise databases include those that are used to support enterprise resource planning systems and data warehouses. Finally, we describe the roles of the various people who are typically involved in a database development project.
