An FPSO project involves many elements, such as engineering of the hull, topsides, mooring system, integration of the topsides onto the hull, towing to site, installation on site, and commissioning. Compared to tankers, which are built in shipyards, there are several major interfaces to be managed, such as between the topsides facilities design and the hull design and between the multiple contractors involved. Usually, for financial and risk-spreading reasons, some sort of a consortium is formed involving owners, joint venturers, and operators; all have a say and can affect one or more of the work elements required in an FPSO contract.
